Last night

was lovely. I started stitching 'Forest Snowfall' by Country Cottage Needleworks. I watched Bones and Lie to Me and then I stayed up too late :-) watching Jaws. Sad but true, and I loved every minute of it. Here is a progress snap.
The fabric is a little darker IRL, but just a tad. It's 32ct Flagstone Gray from Fabric Flair, the floss is the called for CC and DMC. Now, this morning I have noticed a problem :-(

The brown stitching I have done so far is using CC Little House Brown and I have noticed that the floss I have is a lot lighter than what was used to stitch the model pic - Look at the roof, that is way darker. As a result there is not much contrast between it and the *lighter* of the two browns, Country lane, in fact in some places they are the same colour.
So what to do? I could order another skein on Little House Brown and hope that it is darker (but there is always the chance that it will be just the same) or I could subsitute for something from my stash ( CC Cocoa Bean looks like a contender). So, any thoughts? Sometimes I find it hard to just make a decision!
This weekend we are going to Edinburgh Zoo , and combining this with a visit to see my brother, his fiancee and their son, and their new house. So I'll be back next week with pics of wild animals and cute kids, or should that be cute animals and wild kids! :-D
Don't forget to check out my stash for sale.
Have a great weekend,
Sadie x

I have occasionally had a simple problem with the CC browns. I would just substitute a slightly darker one (or lighter) for one of them. I did that on a couple of my pieces in the past.

Have fun at the zoo.

Sounds like a wonderful evening indeed!! What a gorgeous piece and what beautiful progress. My 2cents worth, I would substitute from the stash!!!

Great start so far Sadie. Love it! I agree with the other two ladies and substitute from your stash if you're not happy with the difference in between the two colors. I love Cocoa Bean... Have a wonderful weekend!

A lovely way to spend the evening. I'd substitute one of them. There is nothing worse than carrying on and not being happy with the result. Enjoy your weekend

Lately I'm just itching to be stiching....snow! Really! There is a design out there called "Think Snow" (I'm not sure who did it, but...) But, I'm stitching (somewhat exasperatedly) a wonderful, summery BBD piece. It's a loaner (being OOP) from a very generous lady, and after waiting months for the linen I MUST get it finished and back to her before the new year! :P

Well, enough of my "problem", as for your floss issue, just sub it out! I can tell you that most of my xstitch heartache has come from too-close adherence to the chart's "recipe", and disappointment when it can't be gotten or doesn't work. The needlepoint shop up the street is breaking me of that--those ladies don't blink, but just grab another brand/line of fibers off the wall. Don't worry, there's no way that your substitution won't be great--no one who did such a beautiful finish/tin top/cord braiding as you did on that Halloween moon kitty would pick a bad match. ;) Go for it!

Before I read your substitute choice, I was thinking CC cocoa bean. I will have to check out that pattern. I love stitching winter patterns as well as fall ones. Btw... hubby checked out your blog last night and he really likes it. He said that it looks like you and your husband would be a fun couple. Don't know if I've told you before , but your children are so adorable! My Friday gift idea is a hot chocolate syrup in case you want to check it out.

Take care!

If you want it to look like the model and your floss isn't going to achieve that, then by all means sub to your hearts content. It is to make you happy in the end. Not the designer.

I sub colors all the time now. If it'll make you enjoy your piece more, then definately do it. I think it looks great so far.

I like the progress on this piece. You did a lot.

What a lovely piece--great progress! Personally, I'd sub out the what-should-be-darker brown for the Cocoa Bean. I hate having to make those decisions, too--never trust my own color choices.

Enjoy your weekend.

I would substitute. And Cocoa Bean sounds like a good choice to me. It looks lovely btw. :)

What a great way to spend a Friday night! Love this piece, but I agree with everyone else. Sub out of your stash. Nothing worse than stitching with a color you know isn't pleasing you, only to rip it out a week later. Skip ahead to the "I'm going to do it my way" part. Have fun at the zoo!

Sadie, I was watching a lot of TV last night too and stitching. I watched a movie by Hallmark called "The Witches Daughter" it was all filmed on location in Scotland. I really enjoyed it. Before that I watched an animal rescue show.

Well if I were you I wouldn't order anymore floss. I have had that problem too with hand dyed almost being the same. I think your idea to use the Cocoa Bean sounds like a winner.

I hope things work out to where your happiest. But it does look very nice.

Sounds like the perfect evening.
I go with the other commenters. I'd not buy another thread but use some from my stash. I once had the same problem with greens and just substituted one for another green from my stash. The outcome was exactly as I wanted it to be.

Hi Sadie! Just discovered your blog and I love the current piece you're working on...Hopefully you can find a suitable gloss among your stash that works... I'll bet the zoo visit was fun for all. My middle son volunteers at the zoo here in Pittsburgh and always has the greatest tales to tell about the animals :)

What a lovely piece to be working on! Don't you just hate it when a thread colour looks completely different. I say go with your instinct on what looks better. Hope you had fun at the zoo!

I would just improvise! It looks wonderful so far and you won't even notice when it's done. I've done that before too, lol. It's looking so pretty already!

Live dangerously...change up to the other CC thread color. I would.

Hi there,
Found your blog from Sharlotte's blog, A Happy Needle. You have lovely taste and I really like your new project.
I would stay with the brown you are using. I think it looks great, and your not going to have them sitting right next to each other, so unless it really bothers you, I would just keep going. You could also do the roof in a darker brown but keep the sides and door lighter. I think that would look great too.
It was great to find you!

I say if you like the dark color, go with it. No one will look at it and say "Hey, that doesn't match the chart photo", LOL. Your stitching looks great, though.

I think subbing out sounds like a good idea. Hope you had fun at the zoo - one of my most favorite places to go! Nice progress on your stitching!

Sdaie...first visit to your blog, and it is lovely! Love your background alot!! Will be coming back to read in the archives and in the future!!

From a shopowner, DO substitute...sometimes dyelots are hard to get to hold true from dyelot to dyelot, and I have substituted quite often for myself and others. If your Cocoa Bean is much darker, then go with it!!

It is so lovely, and I always stay up too late!

Definitely SUBSTITUTE! It will make you happier when you look at the finished product!
